Multi-User Domain (MUD)

Hi,

I wanted to add my two cents to this forum because, for starters, I didn't see any posts in here, and secondly, I happen to know of a type of accessible game available at very low cost. I'm talking about MUDs. For those of you who don't know what a MUD is, it stands, literally, for Multi-User Domain (or Dungeon). I tend to think of them as "living books" in which you can take part.

Essentially, a MUD is an online environment, usually completely text-based, that functions as a world unto itself. There are many genres, the most popular being the "medieval fantasy" genre (or the online approximation of Dungeons and Dragons). Since they're generally completely text-based, they're fairly well suited for the blind.

Personally, I inhabit a MUD called EverDark, found online at "everdark.org 3000". (You'd need to telnet to "everdark.org 3000" in order to connect and play.) I'm not saying that EverDark is the best one around, but I've enjoyed it for quite some time. If any of you decide to drop in and check it out, please look me up! (I go by the name of Talen mac Lir, my online persona.)

Apparently there is some sort of issue at the colocation centre that houses the box that Everdark runs on. I don't know the details but supposedly the box is being moved and will come back up.

Glad to actually hear from the wizards on this. Been trying to find info on this as without the actual website the link between us all goes down. Any idea what is happening with the box? To those who're wondering...

I *do not* have any of the particulars on why EverDark is down. However, when I last spoke with NL he entertained the idea of moving to a new box. Based on that I get the impression that he must think the situation is fairly terminal down in SoCal. I could be wrong, that's just my impression.

I am looking at options of colo'ing the box in the NorCal area somewhere. If anyone has an available server and (more importantly) bandwidth, by all means, let me know via email: talen at stormnet dot com

Good to see this is being looked into. I am really having Everdark withdrawls, but am relieved to hear that others are checking into this situation as well. I've had at least a dozen players other than those who have commented asking me about EverDark as well. Unfortunately I've been as uninformed as the rest of them.

I've looked at about 6 other muds since ED went down a month or so ago and have found nothing that compares. Its unfortunate that this is our ownly means of communication. If there is anything I can do, and you're related to EverDark you may contact me for help. Talen and Jareth both have my email as well as about 20 other EverDarkians...so I should be available.

Though, if we need to start recoding/redescribing it from the bottom up I'm betting that could be arranged between all of us that are so interested in ED. Heh, whatever it takes to get my favorite passtime back.
